I have illustrated
nonsense poems by two authors – Danill Kharms and Spike Milligan. I chose illustrate
them, because I wanted to tool into two different world: East (Dhanil Kharms)
and from West (Spike Milligan). The authors represent East and West countries
and poems show its spirit.
Firstly, I was not
sure by what topic I should arrange poems in the book. When I revised poems, by
reading them not one time, I understood that I could sense policy. By that, I selected tree poems from Danill Kharms and tree
from Spike Millligan.
My first decision was
to make the book arranging lino cuts printing and monotype. In the process of lino cuts, I made all poems
thinking, that it might be choice to pic best images later. Later in my process
I involved monotype printing. When I had all prints together, I looked critically
at them. The lino cuts were not convincing me, because of the lines, shades and
its mood. Some places were not cut enough, while some places were too pale. It
showed me, that I still have lack of the technique and should improve for
better results. However, I was looking at other artists who make lino cuts, but
I understood that to teach myself to make like they made, I should gain more
experiences. For that reason, the lino cuts were ‘abandoned’ and I decided do
not arrange them in to the book. Only one lino cut I took for the book cover as
it is in harmony of the brown paper.
Later I made monotype printing. The monotype printing is fascinating
me because of the unpredictability – when you make your print, you never know,
what you are going to get. This technique gives a lot unusual results, what are
interesting to look at. Then I made all six poems in monoprint technique. I
would say that they are successfully made and can attract a viewer’s eye.
At the end, I thought about typography. There I get into
troubles: as I wanted to make typography in monoprinting applying my
handwriting. but it did not go well. The problem appeared that the letters were
to small and I could not arrange them on the surface right. Also
unpredictability of the monotype, gave not pleased results as the text weren’t seen
clearly on the page. Some poems were too long and it was difficult to get unity
between them. Having the written text, it did not work as the book format appeared
not comfortable to use. Accordingly, that, I have decided to write typography
handy; I reasonably did not think about nice writing, as I was illustrated
nonsense poems. Everything is possible in nonsense, I thought and my book looks
like the pupils note book to look at. Overall it could be better, but I now
have what was the subject – the nonsense Japanese sewn book.
